Ferran Agulló

Ferran Agulló i Vidal was born in the city of Girona on 12 September 1863. He was associated to varying extents with a number of periodicals, some based in Girona or Barcelona and others outside Catalonia. Noteworthy in his journalistic output was his work for La Veu de Catalunya, in which he published penetrating articles and parliamentary reports under the pen-name Pol in the “Efemèrides catalanes” and “Al dia” sections.

In the literary field, Ferran Agulló also rose to prominence, winning many awards in Girona, Figueres, Olot, La Bisbal and elsewhere before winning definitive acclaim through the Barcelona Jocs Florals poetry festival, where he was proclaimed Mestre en Gai Saber (Master of Poetics) in 1893 after winning both the Flor Natural love-poetry prize and the Englantina patriotic-poetry prize. He published various books of rhetorical, declamatory and romantic poetry, and two plays.

In the political sphere, he was closely bound up with the regionalism that was emerging in the late nineteenth century.

Ferran Agulló's death signified the disappearance of an outstanding press man, committed to his country.
